Easier rules coming for small homes and granny flats
The Government is introducing changes that will make it simpler to build small standalone homes - like granny flats - under 70m².
From early 2026, some dwellings may be built without needing a building consent, provided they meet specific design and safety requirements.
What this means for you
The changes aim to make it faster and more affordable to add a secondary dwelling or a small home on to your land.
This could provide a great option to add value to your property, or create more living spaces for family, hobbies or rental use.
You’ll still need to meet Building Code and local council rules such as zoning and site coverage.
