Versatile Homes and Buildings Cromwell is owned and operated by David and Marie Holden.
Dave and Marie have been Versatile franchisees since 2000 and they, along with their team, have an excellent understanding of their local market. They understand the extreme weather conditions that Central Otago can produce and how best to build your new garage, farm building or home to cope with these conditions.
They are on hand to assist you with your building requirements and can take care of all details, from initial site consultations and advice, to building consents and anything else you may require for your finished project.

Incredibly friendly, efficient, and accommodating
At the beginning of the process, we were rather clueless (never having built before), but Versatile were incredibly friendly, efficient, and accommodating to our specific situation. We didn't choose a set plan, but went with our own design to meet the features of our piece of land.
Heather was so very patient with us, even after we requested plan changes for the umpteenth time. We never felt pressured to settle with anything less than perfect.
When the build started, we were very impressed with the quality of the tradies on site. They were not only excellent at their jobs, but also willing to listen and assist with practical solutions when we came across minor issues. Our builder Paul in particular took real ownership overall, and would take time to explain the build process to us. Our Project Manager Mark was also quick to respond to any issues. People say that building projects never stick to schedule, but ours did, in fact we moved in two weeks earlier than planned.
Even after moving in, Versatile attended to final touch ups without prompting from us. Overall, we are very satisfied with the service we received from Versatile, and are really happy with the quality of our new house.

Our beautiful new home in Cromwell
After we sold the last house you built for us and started looking for a new site we also took the opportunity to see what other building companies in the area could offer. We soon decided to ask you to build our next home because we knew you would build a great quality product, we understood your working style and had already established complex trust in your level of workmanship.
From the beginning of the design process (after looking at existing plans and how they would fit on our site) until when we decided to come up with our own plan, you and your team took on-board all our suggestions and changes in the plan layout until we came up with the final design.
Given that we were living in the North Island and building a house in the South Island meant much of the communication was via email but we still managed to achieve this wonderful home. We appreciated the weekly updates and the photos of progress, especially as we could only visit the site once a month until we relocated to Cromwell the month before we moved in.
Now we are here we love the layout and it has a really nice flow from the separate lounge to the spacious living/dining/kitchen and the four generous bedrooms, separate toilet and bathroom, to our large ensuite and walk in robe. I love our kitchen and walk in pantry layout and the fact that its generous size and quality fittings means you can be connected with your guests in the rest of the living room while preparing meals, etc. Also each of the three ranch sliders from the lounge, living and master bedroom connect fantastically with the patio and garden outdoors. In face we love the views from every windows in the house!
We also appreciated the extra help you provided with the landscaping and outdoor areas which were not part of the original contract – the exposed concrete driveway and paths, assisting us to erect our garden shed and wood shed, the construction of our kwila decking, the building of our concrete block wall on the patio and the large pergola off the living room and lounge.
This is a home in which we will enjoy entertaining our family and friends – the main reason we came back to the South Island. Of course you will always be welcome.

Heather has made this journey a very exciting and fun experience for us and we are utterly thrilled with the results!
Heather quickly put us at ease, filling us with confidence that building with Versatile was going to be stress-free and exciting. Meeting Dave also gave us confidence knowing that we were dealing with locals and that we were not going to be “just a number” but that we were providing them with an opportunity to help us make our dream a reality. The sub-contractors who also worked on our home have been professional and their work has been completed to a very high standard. We quickly felt like we were part of a team and that they were all there to help and guide us through what can be a very stressful time.
Whilst we were keen to replicate the show home plan, it wouldn’t fit on our section. So Heather quickly offered to do a design and build specifically for us, based on the features the show home had that we liked. It was only a matter of a few days when Heather presented us with our own design and with only a few minor “tweaks” we settled on a plan.
Heather was incredibly patient with us, answering my numerous emails and questions thoroughly. If there was ever something that she wasn’t sure of, she quickly found the answers and came back to us. We appreciated her advice and experience and because of her excellent guidance the building of our new home has been stress-free and fast! It seems like only a couple of months since the slab was poured and we are almost ready to move in!
I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Heather to anyone who is contemplating building a new home. Heather has made this journey a very exciting and fun experience for us and we are utterly thrilled with the results! We can’t wait to move in and begin enjoying our new home and we are looking forward to the longer evenings so we can enjoy a wine outside in the fabulous Central Otago summer!

You made the build a joy and stress free for me
Living in Sydney I needed a building company that could manage the build on my behalf and communicate through email and phone calls.
Heather at Versatile Cromwell project managed the build and I was extremely happy with how this was managed from start to finish. The communication I received from Heather and the team was excellent, I received regular progress updates and pictures every couple of days. I was confident that my build would be completed to the high Versatile standard, as I was only able to visit the site once during the build.

Very pleased with the end result
I dealt with Versatile in Cromwell for a very long period of time when going through resource consents, council regulations and herrings with the environmental courts to finally being able to build my garage. David was also honest with me in every aspect and with the timing of my garage.

Warren and David in Cromwell have been great to deal with. They have communicated well throughout the building process and any problems as they arose were worked through quickly and efficiently. Bolchie and his production team did a fantastic job of managing the build. The quality of the finish exceeded our expectations and the build was finished on time (which was impressive, given the tight timeline and some pretty poor weather conditions experienced over the build).
Best of all, staff that have moved into the cottages are extremely happy with their living accommodation.
